As the smell of California wildfires filled the air, President Donald Trump ignored it on Monday the scientific consensus that climate change is playing a central role in the historic hell that consumes the west coast of the country and repeated its unfounded claim that it is largely due to the fact that the dry leaves are not swept from the forests.

His Democratic rival, Joe Biden, said Monday in his own speech that the destruction and rising death toll in California, Oregon and Washington require better presidential leadership and called Trump a “climate arsonist.”

Trump traveled to Northern California on Monday to be briefed on the situation by Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom and other state and federal officials. At one point, the secretary of the state Natural Resources Agency, Wade Crowfoot, urged the president to “recognize the change in climate and what it means for our forests.”

“If we ignore science and close our eyes and think that it is all due to vegetation management, we are not going to succeed together in protecting Californians,” Crowfoot added.

Trump responded: “It’s going to start getting cold, you’ll see.”

Crowfoot politely responded that he wishes science would agree with the president. Trump replied, “In fact, I don’t think science knows.”

Biden criticized Trump, saying that the moment requires “leadership, not looking for scapegoats” and that “it is clear that we are not safe in the United States of Donald Trump.”

“This is another crisis, another crisis for which he will not be held responsible,” said the former vice president, noting that, if voters give “a climate change denier” another four years in the White House, “why what should we be surprised to have more parts of the United States on fire? ”
