State services and voluntary formations showed today how to react in situations of disasters, accidents and catastrophes with severe trauma.
At the University “Prof. Dr. Asen Zlatarov” – Burgas hosted the first scientific-practical conference, which aims to unite Bulgarian and foreign experience in emergency medicine and disaster medicine. Organizers are the university with the Union of Paramedics in Bulgaria and the support of the Municipality of Burgas. It brought together over 200 doctors from emergency centers and wards, military doctors and paramedics, counter-terrorism experts, rescue and volunteer units.
Cadets from the National Military University “Vasil Levski” – Veliko Tarnovo, freed hostages kidnapped by terrorists. A soldier was injured during the operation, but received immediate medical attention on the battlefield. A military paramedic rescued him under enemy fire. This was the first demonstration watched with interest by those present.
The second was carried out entirely by volunteers from “Cave Rescue” and “Emergency Rescue” – Plovdiv, with the main character being the rescue dog Chadda.
She unmistakably smelled a tourist lost in the cave. Neither the many people nor the narrow spaces in the difficult terrain made it difficult for her. The tourist was evacuated with special equipment using ropes and handed over to the medical services.
The third demonstration involved firefighters, police and paramedics. They pulled out a woman injured in an accident from a car. The car was cut open for quicker and easier access and the services worked together to support the woman’s life until she was loaded into the CSMP ambulance.
“I am happy that it is our university that hosts an event of this magnitude. No one wants to have disasters and accidents, but excellent practical training is key to saving human life,” comments Prof. Dr. Hristo Bozov, Rector of the University “Prof. Dr. Asen Zlatarov” – Burgas.
“The future of Bulgarian emergency medicine is for it to be like the European one and for all institutions to react together. We are working in this direction and I believe that it will happen,” said Dr. Teodor Tsankov, vice-president of the Union of Paramedics in Bulgaria.
Conference participants and university medical students had the opportunity to test their skills on high-tech simulators.
They provide conditions as close as possible to the real ones in medicine – emergency conditions, various diseases. The bodies are absolutely identical to those of living people, and the built-in software gives virtual reality – crying, suffering, bleeding. They can be intubated, catheterized, various types of dressings applied. Simulators are already used in the training of medical students in some Bulgarian universities.
The guest of the conference was the president of the European Community of Emergency Medicine (EUSEM). Dr. Robert Leach, who highly appreciated the excellent training of the Bulgarian rescue services.
