Kyriakos Mitsotakis is in Brussels for the first EU-Gulf Cooperation Council Summit, co-chaired by the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al Thani.
Immigration will be at the center of the debate, with the president of the Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, having already sent a letter to the 27 leaders underlining the importance of implementing the EU-Turkey statement on the issue.
The meeting comes at a time of “freeze” in Brussels, as Germany insists on its unilateral stance, while the Netherlands and Hungary have asked to be exempted from EU rules on asylum and immigration.
Upon his arrival at the European Union – Gulf Cooperation Council Summit, the Prime Minister also referred to the geopolitical developments in the Middle East, talking about a ceasefire in Gaza and the need to prevent the escalation of violence in southern Lebanon.
In detail, the Prime Minister stated the following:
“The first High Council between the European Union and the Gulf Cooperation Council is being held at an extremely critical juncture. Greece is located at the south-eastern tip of Europe and obviously has every desire to further deepen the relations between the European Union and the Gulf countries.
Besides, on a bilateral level, it maintains excellent relations with all six states that make up the Cooperation Council. It is very important, however, to further deepen relations at the level of the European Union, especially in a cooperation that at a time when our cooperation is increasingly necessary, as the wider Middle East is at risk of a military flare-up.
It is extremely important at this time to reiterate our call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza so that this unimaginable humanitarian catastrophe does not continue. And to intensify our pressure so that southern Lebanon does not turn into a Gaza, within the framework of Israel’s legal right to be able to defend itself against Iranian attacks.
But right now what is required first and foremost is restraint, so that we can give time to put back on the table the only political solution that can deal with the structural problem of the Middle East, which is not other than the creation of two states that can co-exist in peace, so that we can deal at the root of the structural problem that is driving this region into a state of sure fire.”
