The number of Covid-19 victims in Brazil has risen to 300,685 since the start of the pandemic, and 12.2 million cases of the new coronavirus have also been confirmed in the country, the Ministry of Health said. Brazil is also second in the world after the United States in terms of infection rates.
Brazilian President Jairie Bolsonaru has previously announced the establishment of a crisis committee to fight the pandemic. The president has changed course, with increasing pressure on him over the Covid-19 situation, which he has repeatedly sought to portray as insignificant.
Bolsonaru promised after a meeting with the heads of both houses of Congress, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, the president of the central bank, government ministers and six of the 27 state governors that no one would “politicize” the pandemic.
“The prevailing mood is solidarity and a commitment to minimize the impact of the pandemic. Life comes first,” Bolsonaru said at the presidential palace.
The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) warned on Tuesday that the situation in Brazil in the Covid-19 area is “terrible” and threatens the rest of the region.
“The virus continues to spread dangerously throughout Brazil. [Inficēšanās] “The number of cases and deaths is rising, and many states have filled a very large proportion of intensive care beds,” said Caris Etienne, PAHO ‘s director.
