The number of Covid-19-related deaths in Brazil has exceeded half a million. Brazil is now the second country in the world to surpass pandemic deaths alongside the United States.
Nearly 18 million Brazilians have been confirmed to be infected with the Covid-19 virus, but some 800,000 new cases of coronavirus have been reported every day recently. Only 15% of adults have been vaccinated.
As the virus continues to spread, the Brazilian Institute of Health has warned that the situation is critical. The bed occupancy of intensive care units is still around 80% in most states.
Experts warn that the start of winter in the southern hemisphere next week could lead to an even greater increase in infections.
The far-right government of President Jaira Bolsonari has expressed skepticism about the seriousness of the pandemic since its inception, as well as opposed the introduction of restrictions, warning of the devastating effects on the economy. Until relatively recently, Bolsonaru was also skeptical about vaccination.
The opposition accuses the president of delaying the purchase of vaccines for political reasons. At the same time, a parliamentary commission is currently investigating the government’s pandemic crisis policy. On Saturday, protests against the Bolsonaru pandemic policy took place in several Brazilian cities.
