In Brazil, Lula defends the right to abortion and creates controversy

Even before having launched his official candidacy for the next Brazilian presidential election, in October 2022, the former leader Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (2003-2010) created a controversy by addressing a subject generally avoided by the left during electoral campaigns, that of the legalization of voluntary termination of pregnancy (IVG).

Tuesday, April 5, during a debate organized by a German foundation in São Paulo, the former Brazilian president indeed “defended the decriminalization of abortion”, prohibited in Brazil except in cases of rape, risk to the life of the pregnant woman and serious congenital problems of the fetus, and affirmed “that the subject should be treated as a matter of public health”, reports the site metropolises. The future candidate of the Workers’ Party (PT) also noted the fact that the criminalization of abortion mainly endangers the lives of poor women, without access to safe methods.

“Poor women die trying to abort, while rich people go to Paris.”

These remarks aroused strong reactions among evangelicals and supporters of Jair Bolsonaro, largely opposed to abortion. “L‘ex-president’s agenda has always been the culture of death’, thus posted on Instagram the pastor Damares Alves, who recently left his post as Minister of Women, Family and Human Rights to seek a parliamentary mandate
