German Chancellor Olaf Scholz today refused to respond to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky‘s call for an invitation from NATO for Ukraine to join the alliance. The request for an invitation in the “Influence Plan” that Zelensky submitted recently, according to the report of France Presse, is announced by BTA.
“It is important to understand that a country at war cannot be a member of NATO. Everyone knows it, there is no disagreement about this issue,” said Scholz on Cet De Ef television.
He recalled that at the alliance’s summits in Vilnius last year and in Washington this year, the leaders reported on the prospects for Ukraine’s accession, but when the allies decide and the conditions for this are present. “But I think beyond that there is no new need for a decision at this time,” he said.
Last week, Zelensky asked for an invitation from the current alliance, which will be the only real guarantee for the security of his country. He also requested that the Western countries lift restrictions on the use of weapons that they bring to Ukraine to strike in Russia, as well as the deployment of non-nuclear disarmament weapons on the territory ofUkraine. None of these requests have met with unanimous support from the friends so far, notes AFP.
During the interview tonight, Scholz reiterated his position that NATO should avoid becoming a party to the conflict launched by Russia against Ukraine in February 2022. He also stated that he was opposed to the delivery of long-range German Taurus missiles that could reach targets far inside Russian territory – something that Ukraine has long wanted.
