Belgium planned to abandon the use of nuclear energy as early as 2025, but Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and its impact on Belgium and neighboring countries have made them reconsider. The Belgian government decided last March that two reactors at nuclear power plants near the German border and near the city of Antwerp would continue to operate, but an agreement was reached this month with the energy company Engie.
Belgian Prime Minister Alexandre de Croix stressed that extending the life of nuclear reactors is an essential step to ensure security of energy supply in the next decade.
It should be noted that last November the parliament of the large neighboring country Germany also allowed to postpone the closure of the nuclear power plants operating in the country to avoid a possible electricity deficit. However, the three stations will only operate until April 15 this year. On the other hand, another country bordering Belgium, the Netherlands, will build two new nuclear power plants.
