A court in Belarus has sentenced “railway partisan” Vitaly Melnyk to 16 years in prison in a strict regime colony, transmit the Dissidentby project.
Melnyk was charged with four items: an act of terrorism (part 1 of article 289 of the Criminal Code), deliberately making railway tracks unusable for the purpose of an act of terrorism (part 4 of article 309 of the Criminal Code), insult to Lukashenka (Part 1 of Article 368 of the Criminal Code) and illegal acquisition and possession of firearms (Parts 2 and 3 of Article 295 of the Criminal Code).
In addition to the prison sentence, Melnik was fined 300 basic units (equivalent to $3,800).
According to the file, in March, a man set fire to the relay cabinet of a self-locking traffic light, thereby disabling the alarm system, thereby creating “a real threat of serious consequences in the form of an accident, damage to rolling stock, death or personal injury.”
During the arrest, Melnik was shot in the legs. “The officers of the internal affairs bodies reasonably used firearms – they shot in the lower limbs, as there was a real threat of armed resistance,” the attorney general’s office said in a press release.
The press release says the guns were found in Melnik’s car and home, and he insulted Lukashenka on social networks.
April 6 telegram channel “Yellow Plums” informed about the arrest of a 40-year-old man from the Minsk region and three residents of Bobruisk for “preparing sabotage” on the railway.
