Hundreds of police and soldiers closed the center of the capital Minsk according to the DPA. Authorities in the city center have closed some subway stations and turned off high-speed internet for mobile phones to complicate people’s arrangements for protests.

“Today is a special day,” said opposition leader Sviatlana Cichanouska. Less than two weeks ago, it called on the president to resign and release all political prisoners, or the country will be paralyzed by a nationwide strike on Monday.

Lukashenko has ruled Belarus for 26 years, and this August the Central Election Commission declared him the winner of the presidential election again. The opposition, the European Union, the United States and other countries consider the results to be manipulated.
