Ukrainian troops managed to push the enemy from the “road of life” in Bakhmut to a “significant distance”, making it impossible for Russia to keep the road under fire control, said Yury Fedorenko, a Ukrainian military official.
Ukrainian forces have “improved their positions” in the city, Fedorenko added, although he acknowledged that “the fighting is heavy”.
He said Ukraine was “holding the line in the most difficult areas” and had achieved some tactical successes, CNN reports.
According to Fedorenko, Russia’s forces are “constantly conducting attacks in the direction of Bakhmut and constantly trying to advance.”
The TV cannot independently verify Fedorenko’s claims.
It is difficult to determine exactly where each side’s troops are during the grueling fighting for Bakhmut, and Kiev and Moscow often offer different reports on the state of the fighting on the ground.
In recent weeks, senior Ukrainian generals have claimed that Russian forces have been exhausted in Bakhmut. The generals say a Ukrainian counter-offensive could begin soon, raising the prospect of an unlikely turnaround in the besieged city.
