In Austria, UK mutation accounts for most new COVID cases

The Austrian Ministry of Health analyzed the data for the last week of February. More than half of the infections were with the British strain.

Most of the new COVID-19 cases in Austria in the last week of February were caused by a British mutation of the coronavirus. This was stated by the head of the Austrian Ministry of Health Rudolf Ashober on Sunday, March 7.

For the week, the British strain accounted for 58.4% of all confirmed cases of coronavirus infection in Austria.

“This dominance of the ‘British’ strain is not good news for Austria. It is much more infectious than the ‘parent’ virus: in our country, according to current estimates, it is 23%,” Ashober said.

At the same time, the “parent” virus SARS-CoV-2 in Austria accounted for 36.3% of all cases of coronavirus.

In addition to the British mutation B.1.1.7, the South African strain B1.351 was recorded in Austria. The mutation is especially common in the federal state of Tyrol – there it was found in 11% of all COVID-19 patients.

Doctors are checking suspicions for the presence of the Brazilian mutation B.1.1.28 in Austria, but the relevant examinations are still ongoing.

Recall that earlier in Austria protested against quarantine… Demonstrators demanded a weakening of quarantine measures tightened by the authorities amid the third wave of coronavirus in Europe.

It was also reported that in Austria suspended vaccination with one batch of AstraZeneca… After vaccination, a 49-year-old woman died and a 35-year-old woman developed pulmonary embolism.
