In August, more foreign guests were registered in tourist accommodation establishments than in July

In August 2021, 255.6 thousand foreign and local guests were served in Latvian tourist accommodation establishments, which is by 14.9% less than in August 2020 and by 0.5% less than in July, according to the data of the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB). Guests spent 446.4 thousand nights in tourist accommodation, which is 16.7% less than in August last year and 1.2% less than in July.

In August of this year, 148.5 thousand Latvians were served in tourist accommodation, which is 3.4% more than in August 2020 and 19.2% more than in August 2019 before the pandemic. The number of nights spent by local residents was 248.4 thousand, which is an increase of 3.5% compared to August last year.

According to the CSB data, the most popular accommodation places for Latvian residents were in Riga, where 16.1% of guests stayed, Liepāja – 7%, Jūrmala – 6.9%, Cēsis region – 6.6%, Talsi region – 5%, Kuldīga region – 4 , 6% and in Ventspils – 4%.

In August 2021, out of all guests served in tourist accommodation establishments, only 41.9% or 107 thousand were foreign guests, which is 31.6% less than in August 2020, however, by 27.5% more than in July. Compared to August last year, the number of nights spent decreased by 33% to 198 thousand.

The CSB information also shows that most foreign visitors were received from Lithuania (23.6 thousand), Germany (18.3 thousand), Estonia (13.3 thousand), Poland (5.8 thousand), and the United Kingdom ( 4.7 thousand), Italy (3.4 thousand), France (3.1 thousand), Finland (2.9 thousand) and Russia (2.8 thousand).

Most foreign guests were received in Riga – 64.5%, Jurmala – 11.9%, Liepaja – 3.8%, Ventspils – 2.8% and Sigulda region – 2.2%.

The decrease in the number of guests from Lithuania, Estonia and Finland in August 2021 can also be explained by the so-called “Baltic bubble” last summer, within which cross-border travel between neighboring countries and Finland increased significantly last August, according to the CSB.
