In anticipation of the Dance Award ceremony, which will take place on April 29 at the Daile Theater and online, the Latvian Dance Information Center invites to four online talks on topical issues of different dance genres.

According to the organizers, each conversation will focus on its own dance genre – stage folk dance, ballet, contemporary dance and contemporary dance. Dance practitioners and theorists will discuss them, and everyone interested is invited to participate and participate in the conversation. The talks will take place on the “Zoom” platform, will be recorded and later published on the website “Dance.lv”.

On April 13, at 11 a.m., a discussion “What is the stage folk dance in 2021 in Latvia?” Will take place. Rita Spalva, Gunta Skuja, Jānis Purviņš, Krišjānis Šimis, Juris Gogulis are invited to participate in the discussion, who will discuss the following questions: What is the place and significance of stage folk dance in 2021? What do the different concepts of the genre mean (“stage folk dance”, “Latvian stage dance”, “folk dance”, etc.)? What characterizes the stage folk dance? How to distinguish between amateur and professional in stage folk dance? What development path for stage folk dance can be seen in the future?

Conversation moderators: Beāte Svarinska and Elīna Gailīte.

On April 15, at 6 pm, a discussion “Ballet in Latvia. Today ”, in which Agnese Andersone, Baiba Beinaroviča, Tālis Sils, Dmitrijs Gaitjukevičs and Elza Leimane will participate. Discussion questions: What is the role of ballet in the context of contemporary art? How to distinguish between classical ballet, modern ballet and contemporary ballet? Why are there few new and original ballet productions? Why are there no ballet critics in Latvia? What creates competition for Latvian ballet? What could be the most powerful challenges in ballet after a pandemic?

Conversation moderators: Rūta Pūce and Dita Jonīte.

April 20 at 6 pm in the discussion “How contemporary is contemporary dance in Latvia?” Olga Žitluhina, Dita Jonīte, Krišjānis Sants, Kristīne Brīniņa and Valts Miķelsons will meet. During the conversation, they will address the following questions: What is “contemporary”? What is the place of contemporary dance in the context of contemporary culture? What can be read about the process of contemporary dance in Latvia in the Chronicle of Contemporary Dance? What is the best definition of contemporary dance? Which event that has been experienced in Latvia so far would be the best example to illustrate contemporary dance?

Moderators: Lāsma Goba and Agnese Bordjukova.

On April 26 (time to be specified) there will be a conversation “What is the status of modern dance?”. Edmunds Veizāns, Annika Andersone, Andžejs Začiņajevs, Edīte Ābeltiņa and Līga Vološčuka are invited to participate in the discussion. Discussion questions: What makes dance obsolete and outdated? What is meant by “modern dance”? What is the basis of a modern dance dancer, and how does an amateur differ from a professional? Street dance / commercial dance / dance theater / jazz funk – what is to blame for these names, and is it important that contemporary dance in Latvia resonates with what contemporary dance is in the world? What criteria help contemporary dances qualify as art events? How can we together raise the quality and prestige of contemporary dance in Latvia?

Dance prize is the highest award in professional dance art. It is awarded every two years in ballet, contemporary dance, stage folk dance and contemporary dance for achievements in the creation of new productions, performances and dance events, as well as in pedagogical and research work.

The dance award is organized by the Latvian Dance Information Center in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture.
