Learn how to do a cardiac massage, understand the formation of baïnes and how to reach the shore : passers-by and vacationers flock to the stand set up by the Samu 64 on the esplanade of the Sables d’Or beach, in Anglet, this Saturday. While most come to revise or simply learn first aid gestures, the medical teams take the opportunity to give them some advice for days at the beach.
The conditions on the Basque coastline can sometimes be dangerous, such as this weekend when the regional prefecture called for particular vigilance. At the turn of a flyer or a conversation, the members of the Samu therefore try to raise awareness and inculcate the good behavior to have in order to avoid drowning. There were 4 last year on the coast of the Basque Country.
Unknown risks
Yann and Mathilde, who moved to the Basque Country a year ago, say they have since redoubled their vigilance. “I’m a little scared sometimes to go into the water, I don’t really know where to get in”lance Mathilde. “Before, I came more as a tourist with my surfboard, we do not necessarily care about the power of the currents, recognizes Yann. _We need a little reminder_it’s good to have these workshops to get up to date and discover certain phenomena”.
The process of formation of baïnes in particular “is totally unknown” to holidaymakerslaunches doctor Patrice Labes of the Samu. “People want to go in the water when it’s hot, and they get in without wondering where the danger is, he explains. The waves come in series, do not try to get out in the middle. The danger of the baïne is to fight against it because we are exhausted and we drown, whereas if we get carried away, it’s impressive, but _it will necessarily take us a little further_“.
The Samu teams are also trying to make the link with the various traumas that can result from bad behavior at sealike the shocks caused by the “shore break”, these waves at the edge of the shore which break suddenly. “There is a risk of water inhalation in all cases, and it can go to the worst until cardio-respiratory arrestsays Dr. Julie Gouges. The whole thing is to know the right behaviors, the locals are more aware of this. Supervised bathing areas are also better explained recently and why they must be respected: _if there is no one in a place, it means that there is danger_“.
