In Andrejsala, ‘everything blooms at the same time’ – an insight into the RIBOCA2 exhibition in the port area

Last week, on August 20, the second Riga International Biennial of Contemporary Art (RIBOCA2) was opened in Andrejsala, this time offering an exhibition with the title and motto “everything blooms at once”, giving visitors the opportunity to see works of art in those parts of the Riga port closed to the public.

The exhibition “Everything Blooms at the Same Time” is located in the 200,000-square-meter territory of the Riga Industrial Port, features projects implemented by 65 individual participants and nine groups, and visitors will be able to witness the shooting of a feature film. The curator of the RIBOCA2 exhibition is Rebecca Lamarsha-Vadela.

Due to the constraints of the Covid-19 pandemic, the exhibition has been moved from this spring to autumn and will be open for one month only – until September 13. However, throughout the event, it will be complemented by public program events, inviting visitors to engage in thought-provoking conversations and lectures, engage in both practical and meditative workshops, and discovery tours led by RIBOCA2 Art Journals. This week, the exhibition will be enriched by lectures by Timur Si-Qin and Eiver Gordon, Senior Talks, Bridget Polka’s workshops and practical classes at the Plant.

The list of events for this week’s public program begins with a lecture by RIBOCA2 artist Timur Si-Qin on Wednesday, August 26, at 6:30 p.m. According to the creators of the exhibition, the artist’s work is characterized by “branded ecosystems and 3D printed sculpture installations, light boxes and virtual reality, seeking through these works a way of thinking that goes beyond anthropocentric dualism – good and evil, mind and body, matter and soul, located in the center of Western consciousness. ” In the exhibition of the Biennale, Si-Qin contextualizes the project of a new, secular faith “New Peace”, looking at Latvia’s pagan traditions and their heritage. During the lecture, the artist will not only delve into the concept of the work exhibited by RIBOCA2, but will also look at issues specific to his art practice in general, touching on topics such as contemporary philosophy, cultural development and cognitive dynamics.

Seniors are invited to a discussion on Thursday, August 27, at 2 p.m. Organizing FISH Seniors’ conversations, the creators of the education program want to actualize the need for re-evaluation of stereotypes related to contemporary art and its chosen audience – the content of works of art created in contemporary art practices is not relevant only for the younger generations. Without emphasizing the superiority of a generation, the experience and opinion of each visitor to the exhibition can become a catalyst for solving various contemporary issues and evaluating the views actively represented in society. However, given that RIBOCA2 intends to focus on reflection on the end of our inhabited world and the possibilities of building a new one, this topic is especially relevant in conversations with the elderly, who have already experienced the collapse of the system and the creation of a “new world”. . Such experiences and memories of times of change are valuable for further discussion about how the worldview and the individual’s relationship with the environment change as a result of drastic changes in daily life. By getting to know the exhibited works in a leisurely rhythm and immersed in the atmospheric environment of Andrejsala, in a cozy atmosphere with a cup of tea and cookies after the exhibition, participants will have the opportunity to share what they see, delaying their experience and arousing common reflection through reflection.

Due to the limited number of participants, the organizers ask to register by writing to the participant [email protected] or by calling + 371 2020 6323. Admission is free for pensioners upon presentation of a pensioner’s card.

Continuing the call of the RIBOCA2 online public program to look at human life and presence on this planet, the evening lecture of the sociologist Eiverija Gordone “Ghost-obsessed futures – utopian border areas” will end on the evening of August 27 at 19.00. Eiverie Gordone, a professor of sociology at the University of California (Santa Barbara) and a visiting professor at the Berkeck School of Law at the University of London, as well as the author of several books and publications, believes that haunting refers to past or present social violence. This lecture, which focuses on the contents of the Vilkalbele archive, will call for reflection on utopian border areas dominated by flight, maroning or autonomous communities of escaped slaves, wandering, deserting soldiers and other, often illegible, forms of asylum, resistance and alternative lifestyles.

You will have the opportunity to experience a sense of balance in person and test your strength in balancing stone sculptures in the master class “Finding Balance” led by RIBOCA2 participant Bridget Polka, which will take place on Friday, August 28, at 15.00. Bridget Polka is known for balancing slag blocks, bricks and natural stones, creating temporary sculptures that together contain only the power of unimaginably fragile balance. Discovering not only the seemingly impossible technical process of stone sculptures, Polka will also introduce the participants to its meditative meaning and how balancing stones helps to experience complete peace, silence and focus. The workshop will be held in English, but translation into Latvian and Russian will be provided as needed. Due to the limited number of participants, the organizers ask to register here.

On Sunday, August 30, the week will end with the next “Last Cleaning Day”, which will take place in cooperation with the “Plant”, where RIBOCA2 visitors are also welcome to linger, relax and work in the garden during the exhibition – either by following the instructions on site or listening to your for intuition. A self-service tea room, including fresh herbs, tomatoes, apples and other goodies (in limited quantities), will be freely available in the garden throughout the Biennale. This time in the “Plant” from 13.00 to 18.00 it will be possible to learn more about the care of the “zero waste” balcony garden, gain an insight into the world of diverse and annual plants, as well as participate in a knitting and weaving workshop.

Following the RIBOCA art ambassadors, each visitor of the exhibition has the opportunity to participate in one of the public tours free of charge to discover the horizons of contemporary art together and get to know its interdisciplinary nature. Tours are available from Tuesday to Friday at 17.00, while on weekends you can choose the most convenient time – 13.00 or 17.00; a valid exhibition ticket is required.

It has already been reported that the exhibition “everything blooms at once” takes place in Andrejsala from August 20 to September 13. The RIBOCA2 project is an exhibition designed as a multi-layered, message-rich experience, culminating in a feature film. The film, created by curator Rebecca Lamarsha-Vadela and co-director Dāvis Sīmanis, will have its premiere in the beginning of 2021.
