The incident was reported to the United States Department of Homeland Security and Alaska Senator Dan Sullivan. His office said the Customs and Border Protection Service is looking into the possibility of detainees entering the United States.

Curtis Siluk, a Gambell administration official, noted that the men were taken off the island on the same day. And state governor Mike Dunleavy said the Russians are now in Alaska’s largest city, Anchorage, where they are run by federal authorities.
