From today, an unmanned bus will run in Aizkraukle for two weeks, brought by Zemgale Planning Region (ZPR), implementing the project “Baltic Sea Region Cooperation for the Transition to Environmentally Friendly Autonomous (Driverless) First / Last Mile Public Transport (” Sohjoa Baltic “)”, LETA informed ZPR representative Ilze Lujāne.
The aim of the project is to improve environmentally friendly transport systems in urban areas by using the diversity of urban transport and serving a larger number of inhabitants.
“With the activities of the Sohjoa Baltic project in Latvia, a wide step will be taken in the use of unmanned transport, researching, promoting and practically testing the possibilities of using autonomous unmanned electric buses in the public transport system,” the ZPR representative emphasized.
The opening event of the unmanned or autonomous bus will take place at 13 Lāčplēša Street 21, near Aizkraukle Sports Hall. Those interested will be addressed by Minister of Transport Tālis Linkaits (JKP), Chairman of Aizkraukle District Council Leons Līdums (Vidzeme Party, LRA).
After the opening ceremonies of the opening event, the bus will make its first trips. It will run on the route from Aizkraukle History and Art Museum to Aizkraukle St. Theresa from the Child Jesus Church, the names of the stops are “Museum” and “Church”, respectively.
“Before Aizkraukle, the same bus ran for two weeks in Jelgava, on Pasta Island, and the project team is happy with the response from the large number of interested people, as almost 4,000 passengers were transported. We hope that Aizkraukle residents and city guests will appreciate the opportunity and learn about new technologies. will not lag behind the people of Jelgava, “explained Raitis Madžulis, the head of the project” Sohjoa Baltic “.
The autonomous bus will travel independently, with various sensors the vehicle will detect the environment and “know” when to brake or stop completely if there is an obstacle in front. However, everyone is advised to exercise caution, not to create artificial obstacles, not to move in front of the bus or otherwise interfere with the operation of the vehicle during both its programming and operation. There will be a constant attendant on the bus, who will be able to take control of it if necessary.
Lujāne explained that ZPR has long been involved in the implementation of several projects related to green energy and environmentally friendly transport. This project emphasizes the regional approach of the project, as the demonstrations are organized in different cities of the region. In cooperation with the Ministry of Transport, the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development and the Road Traffic Safety Directorate, it is planned to continue such projects by implementing them in other cities of Zemgale and applying new innovative technological possibilities, such as full remote control.
It has already been announced that the total budget of the project “Cross-border cooperation for the transition to environmentally friendly autonomous (wireless) first / last mile public transport” is 3.8 million euros, of which 2.8 million euros are co-financed by the Interreg Baltic Sea Region Transnational Cooperation Program. Sohjoa Baltic has united partners from Finland, Estonia, Sweden, Latvia, Germany, Poland, Norway and Denmark.
