Construction on the new Langevin school is well underway. The town hopes to open for the start of the 2025 school year.
The construction of a new Paul-Langevin school by 2025 was one of Jean Dionis’ mandate promises in 2020.
With building permission confirmed last February, and the symbolic first stone laid on June 10, work continues. In the views of the city, there are the dangers of floods (the school is near the rivers Masse and Laurendanne), and the desire to open the Montanou area. The collapse of the building also came into focus, a real thermal sieve.
The courtyards will be enclosed and photovoltaic panels will be installed.
“It’s a very challenging undertaking for us,” said Jean Dionis. “Our backs are against the wall. The goal is to be able to move permanently between July and August 2025. For now, everything is going well. We are currently installing the prefabricated elements of the parts.
Working to accommodate a possible increase in water levels
The file was considered sensitive. The Langevin school had to be rebuilt on Mathieu’s land, which was designated as a flood zone. A risk prevention plan had reassessed this famous area, moving it from the red zone to the blue zone. Development work carried out on the Monbalen and Bajamont reservoirs, to accommodate a possible rise in the Masse.
Therefore, the school group in the future and the ALSH (Leisure Home Without Accommodation) will contribute to the public services that have been established in the area in recent years.
What looked like a wasteland will soon become a new building. When the first stone was laid, the mayor of Agen welcomed the school’s move from the north-east region to the city. Next year, 480 children will enter their new building.
The school was from the late 1960s and was in dire need of renovation.
As a result, the workforce changes. Classes are planned to be divided, with 13 classes in the primary school and 7 classes in the nursery school.
