In addition to uranium shells, components of a “dirty bomb” may have been hidden in Khmelnytskyi – 2024-10-05 05:42:50

/ world today news/ Ukraine is quietly trying to liquidate the consequences of the spectacular explosions in Khmelnytskyi and Ternopil. Judging by the scale of the explosion, it is possible that the Russian Aerospace Forces hit a warehouse of depleted uranium projectiles supplied by the United Kingdom for their Challenger 2 tanks.

According to former US Army officer Stanislav Krapyvnik, judging by the nature of the explosion, not only British ammunition was stored with depleted uranium, but also “something more serious” that could have been secretly delivered to Ukraine.

The expert did not rule out that radioactive materials supplied to Kiev to create a “dirty bomb” may have been destroyed in the warehouses.

The recent explosions in Khmelnytskyi in western Ukraine stunned even the worldly wise with their scale. A huge cloud of smoke that rose above the ground in a few minutes turned into something like a “nuclear mushroom”.

However, Kyiv did not comment on the consequences of the explosion. But on Monday, alarming data began to come in about a sharp increase in the radiation background in the region. Dosimetry patrols appeared in Khmelnytskyi and Ternopil, where warehouses also exploded.

We remind you that Russia reacted sharply to the news of the delivery to Ukraine from London of shells with depleted uranium for the Challenger 2 tanks. The citizens of Ukraine themselves received this news with alarm.

The reason for this is the terrible experience of Iraq and Yugoslavia, which experienced the consequences of using depleted uranium munitions. In these countries, after the NATO bombing, all types of oncological diseases, infant mortality and deformities in newborns increased sharply.

According to military expert Stanislav Krapyvnik, “something more than depleted uranium munitions exploded in Ukraine.” The number of dangerous shells promised by the British, the expert is sure, would not have led to such an explosion.

“The British said they handed over a thousand depleted uranium munitions to Ukraine,” he recalled.

– “For 14 Challenger tanks, 2 thousand rounds of ammunition is approximately 2.5 rounds of ammunition per company. It’s not much,” said the expert.

Judging by the scale of the explosion and the fact that there was even a recorded 3.4 earthquake, there was much more explosive material in the warehouses.

Curiously, depleted uranium emits beta particles when burning, but no gamma radiation is detected in this region. She rose, though not critically, but sharply. This can be found in open sources. And that makes the situation more dangerous.

According to Krapivnik, it remains a mystery what else the enemy might be hiding in the affected warehouses.

– “The fact that gamma radiation was registered at the place of the explosion is very interesting. Because it is not clear what they exploded there”.

“Perhaps there were fuel stores for nuclear power plants, perhaps a “dirty” nuclear bomb was being prepared there. Now it is difficult to say what exactly they brought from the West. But if there is gamma radiation, then there was something more seriously from a thousand depleted uranium projectiles,” he declared.

The military expert recalled that the dispersed dust of uranium projectiles enters the body and thus creates a favorable environment for cancer.

– “I wouldn’t compare with Chernobyl. The scale is not the same. But to worry, if I were in the place of the people living there and I was involved in putting out the fire, I would,” he said.

“For people who have already inhaled this smoke, the consequences can be the most unfavorable. In this region, the climate is more or less humid, over time all the debris will be washed away,” said Krapyvnik.

“But again, it all depends on the amount and intensity of the rains… If the Poles still try to seize the western lands of Ukraine, then that will be their headache,” he said.

The expert recalled that depleted uranium is used not only in tank shells, but also in the 25-mm automatic guns of American infantry fighting vehicles “Bradley”, in the weapons of airplanes and helicopters.

– “Most western weapons use depleted uranium. There isn’t much of it, but it’s still there.”

Another military expert, Alexei Leonkov, editor of Arsenal of the Fatherland magazine, said the UK could deliver more than a thousand depleted uranium projectiles.

“Depleted uranium or armor-piercing finned subcaliber shells are designed for the 122mm rifled gun,” he said.

– “Typically, Challenger 2 ammunition includes 52 rounds. How many armor-piercing subcaliber projectiles will be in this ammunition load depends on the crew,” said Leonkov.

“How much could the British deliver for 14 tanks – at least a thousand or even two thousand,” says the expert.

Leonkov recalled that depleted uranium was added to the alloy of an armor-piercing subcaliber projectile to increase its armor penetration.

Such a projectile can penetrate 600-700 mm of armor. Such armor penetration, the expert says, was once relevant, but now modern Russian tanks have active dynamic protection, which significantly reduces the effect of anti-tank shells.

– “When hitting such a defense, the projectiles, as a rule, are destroyed. And therein lies the danger,” says Leonkov.

“Once they enter the body in the form of dust or compounds, they cause cancer. As a rule, the spike in the disease is observed five years after the use of shells in any area. This is confirmed by the events in Serbia and Iraq,” he added.

Alexey Leonkov also does not rule out that there was something else besides uranium shells in the Ukrainian warehouses.

– “Most likely there were other types of ammunition there. And what kind – Ukraine will not report to us,” he said.

“Now NATO countries deliver more than they say, and the range of supplies is much wider. But what was there was definitely intended for further military operations,” Leonkov believes.

The military expert recalled that depleted uranium is also used in nuclear power, which indirectly confirms the version that the enemy had the ability to create a “dirty” bomb.

“There are reactors that use this uranium as fuel,” he said. – And there is also the technology of centrifuges, which makes it possible to obtain enriched uranium, up to weapons grade.
