The currency falls, inflation rises, and there is a lack of foreign exchange for imports. In order to avoid insolvency, the government in Islamabad urgently needs a new loan from the IMF. Now, of all times, the Taliban are back.
Earlier this week, Pakistan was rocked by the deadliest terrorist attack in years. More than a hundred people were killed at a mosque in Peshawar on Monday when a suicide bomber blew himself up amidst the worshipers, causing the roof to collapse. The mosque in the town, not far from the Afghan border, is part of the local police headquarters. Most of the victims were therefore police officers. Even days later it is unclearhow the perpetrator, disguised as a police officer, was able to get into the highly secured facility with his explosive device unnoticed.
