GIS said that there are complications for Italy’s ambitions to become a center for African energy, foremost of which is the absence of Oil and Gas Minister Mohamed Aoun from signing the Italian Eni agreement with NOC.
In a report entitled “Libya Exposes Italy’s Obstacles in the Energy Field in the Mediterranean,” the site stated that the Russian presence in Libya, through the Wagner Group, may make onshore oil more difficult.
The site expected future problems to follow the agreement, “despite the tones of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s victory,” adding that this is due to the country’s division with two competing governments, one of which did not recognize the agreement, according to the site.
It is noteworthy that the gas agreement between the National Oil Corporation and the Italian company Eni has sparked controversy between the Minister of Oil and Gas, Mohamed Aoun, who described the agreement as illegal, objecting to increasing the share of the Italian company to 37%, in contradiction to the 2008 agreement between Libya and Italy.
