The United States has imposed sanctions on Algoni Hamdan Dagalo Musa (Algoni), the brother of RSF leader Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (Hemedti), for his role in arming Sudan which fueled the war and ’caused terror against civilians.
The Treasury Department said in a statement that the department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control sanctioned Algoni under Executive Order 14098 “for directing efforts to procure weapons to continue the war in Sudan.”
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in another statement that Algoni was involved in the purchase of arms and other military equipment that allowed the forces to carry out their ongoing operations in Sudan, including their attack on El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur.
US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said, “Algoni’s actions fueled the war and the brutal atrocities committed by the Rapid Assistance Forces against civilians, which included war crimes, crimes against humanity , and ethnic cleansing. “
The statement said, “Instead of heeding warnings from the United States and other partners, the Rapid Support Forces and allied militias have continued to commit atrocities, including those that are involved in sexual violence and attacks targeting non-Arab groups.
The statement noted, “The war between the Sudan Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces has caused massive destruction, with tens of thousands killed and more than 11 million people displaced, both at home and abroad over. The people of Sudan want and deserve peace, justice, and a return to civilian government.”
The statement concluded, “Today’s action is part of our ongoing efforts to promote increased accountability for those responsible for this conflict.” .”
Algoni, a logistics director in the Rapid Support Forces, and one of Hemedti’s younger brothers, was close to him and had previously worked as his personal secretary, according to the Ministry of Finance.
He is an important officer in the Rapid Support Forces, and he gets this status because Hemedti prefers to appoint his family members to important positions in these forces.
Algoni controlled RSF front companies, including Tradive General Trading Company, which imported vehicles into Sudan on behalf of the RSF.
Algoni was named, under Executive Order No. 14098, for being a foreign person who holds or has held a position in an organization engaged in “actions or policies that threaten the peace, security or stability of Sudan.”
Under this designation, all property and interests in property belonging to persons subject to sanctions in the United States or owned or controlled by US citizens are frozen, and any entities with one or more of the people who are blocked 50 percent or more, at least. direct or indirect ownership, directly restricted.
OFAC regulations often prohibit all transactions with US citizens or transactions within the United States (including transactions transiting the United States) if they provide including any property or interest in the property of restricted or controlled persons.
