In a rare official statement, the health authorities in China revealed – today, Saturday – a huge death toll from the emerging coronavirus (Covid-19) within 5 weeks.
And Beijing announced that it recorded nearly 60,000 deaths within 5 weeks, which is the first large death toll from Covid-19 that the government has been talking about since the sudden lifting of health measures in early December.
The head of the Medical Administration Office of the National Health Commission, Jiao Yahui, said that China recorded 59,938 deaths related to corona between December 8, 2022 and January 12, 2023.
China is fighting the spread of the Corona virus nationwide after easing the measures to combat it and canceling the “zero Covid” policy, which imposed strict restrictions, put controls on gatherings, and required quarantine.
