Storms in Bucharest and other cities in the country are normal for this time of year, but their intensity is becoming more and more worrying, he said. RFI climatologist Roxana Bojariu.
Roxana Bojariu says that “these storms are ultimately characteristic of the hot season, but their intensity really exceeds what we knew several decades ago. This increased intensity, with episodes of very heavy rainfall, for example, can be linked to climate change, because a warmer atmosphere on average contains an increased amount of water vapor, water vapor that evaporates more and more. more from the warmer surface of the seas, the oceans, but also from the increasingly heated soil, as we enter summer and then, on this load or availability of water vapor, under specific conditions, obviously you can have very heavy rains (…). So the phenomena are normal for the time of year, but their intensity is becoming more and more worrying and it is at least for the climate that we knew several decades ago, abnormal ”.
Asked what a city like Bucharest could look like in 50 years, if no measures are taken to adapt to climate change, Roxana Bojariu claims that the city will no longer be able to live decently.
“In 50 years, it will certainly not be possible to live decently, to have a decent quality of life. With the chaotic development, with this insulation of the soil, with smaller and smaller areas of green spaces and with this traffic, because it also comes with problems, because in addition to the heat input, which can be more or less importantly, we are dealing with local pollution, which together with heat stress actually multiplies the effects of heat stress and you have very big public health problems (…). The citizen must be given the opportunity to choose a greener way of life. Thus, in a city like Bucharest, if you practically try to save your energy or water, we see that unfortunately, the infrastructure practically wastes much more than the citizen’s effort. Then there is the big problem with public transportation. You can’t force a man to go to a public transport that’s not good for an abstract thing, it’s not necessary for such a big city, so the man can choose public transport, but give him the conditions and the possibility to choose “, Says the climatologist.
