According to Climate Change Law, municipalities with more than 50,000 inhabitants must have circulation zones ZBE (Low Emission Zones) by 2023, some very specific and concrete areas within the urban nucleus where Only a certain type of vehicle may circulate according to its DGT environmental labeling. The objective? Improve air quality and reduce pollution levels in large urban centers of our country.
This regulation included within the Climate Change Law is mandatory for all cities and municipalities with more than 50,000 inhabitants.. At the moment, only popular cases of Madrid, Barcelona, Gijón and Rivas-Vaciamadrid (in the province of Madrid)among others, those whose LEZ zones are already clearly limited. Between now and January 2023, that is, in less than four monthsthe rest of the populations that must comply with the regulations have to establish said areas within their corresponding urban centers.
According to Population data compiled by the FEMP (Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces), in our country there are a total of up to 149 municipalities and cities with more than 50,000 inhabitants (at the end of this article we detail the complete list).
For now, there is no common criterion that definitively establishes what types of vehicles will finally be able to circulate through the interior of these LEZ zones, since will be each Town Hall through its different municipal ordinances which will impose the concrete and specific restrictions.
In this regard, there are perspectives and forecasts of the most pessimistic, such as the one made by the Association of Vehicles Affected by Environmental Restrictions (Avarm). From this association it was recently stated that Around 75 per cent of the vehicles in the current car park – those without badges and those with B and C labels – could see access to these LEZ areas restricted. However, other forecasts point to more permissive restrictions and, at least during 2023, vehicles with labels B and C, in addition to the most efficient ZERO and ECO, could enter these areas.
