In addition to the Chinese market where the rapid growth of electric vehicles is encouraged by policies, the European market can be regarded as another region where the growth of electric vehicles is obvious. It is estimated that the best-selling pure electric car model in the European market in 2022 is the Tesla Model Y, but if you zoom in on the brand side, Volkswagen Group, which has many brands, will become the brand with the most sold pure electric cars in the European market; and the best-selling PHEV plug-in The electric car is Ford Kuga.
In terms of electric vehicles, a study of 28 European markets by JATO Dynamic, a well-known automobile-related data analysis company, shows that a total of 1.54 million pure electric vehicles were sold in Europe last year, an increase of 29% over 2021, and the sales champion is about 137,052. Model Y, a massive increase of 424% over 2021. The Model Y was followed by the same-brand Model 3 with 91,475 registrations, actually down 35%.
In third place is the Volkswagen ID.4 with 67,490 registrations, beating the Fiat 500e’s 66,198 by a slight margin. Other vehicles in the top 10 include the Volkswagen ID.3, Skoda Enyaq iV, Dacia Spring, Peugeot e-208, Hyundai Kona Electric and Kia Niro EV. Rounding out the top 10 were the Hyundai Ioniq 5 (37,312 sales), Cupra Born (32,405 sales), Polestar 2 (31,734 sales) and Kia EV6 (28,786 sales). Surprisingly, the generation-old Nissan Leaf still outsold the EV6 with 28,816 units.
In terms of PHEVs, the Ford Kuga led the way with 57,924 units sold, holding the title from 2021 onwards. It is followed by BMW 3 Series (32,405 units), Volvo XC40 (31,234 units), Hyundai Tucson (29,043 units), VOLVO XC60 (28,409 units), Peugeot 3008 (28,358 units), Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross (27,134 units), Jeep Compass (25,860), Lynk & Co 01 (25,798), Kia Sportage (25,444).
Across Europe, internal combustion engine-powered vehicles accounted for 51.4% of all sales, down from 57.9% in 2021. Pure electric vehicles accounted for 13.9 percent of the market, plug-in hybrids 9.1 percent, hybrids 8.7 percent, and mild hybrids 15.3 percent.
