Berlin This year, Germany remains the frontrunner in the European Union for asylum applications. This is what emerges from a confidential “situation report” on migration and the situation of refugees (number 329, published on 14 December 2022) of the EU Commission, as the newspaper “WELT” writes on Saturday according to a preliminary report.
According to this, 190,749 people have applied for asylum in Germany since the beginning of the year, an increase of 57% compared to the same period last year. The “situation report” refers to unreleased data from the European Asylum Support Office (EUAA) dated 13 December.
Germany follows France (115,820 asylum applications), Spain (111,220), Austria (106,554) and Italy (78,897). The increase in asylum applications in 2022 compared to the same period last year was strongest in Ireland (439%), Estonia (362.1%) and Austria (202%). Hungary (43), Slovakia (382) and Latvia (548) register the lowest number of asylum applications. Per capita, however, Austria is far ahead of Germany. Asylum applications are around 1,184 for every 100,000 inhabitants. In Germany there are almost 229 for every 100,000 inhabitants.
Citizens of Ukraine are largely not included in the statistics. Due to the war in their country, according to a decision of the EU interior ministers of March 4, 2022, the so-called EU mass influx directive applies to them. Under this, citizens of Ukraine in EU member states will automatically receive a humanitarian residence permit, which gives them access to education, work, social benefits and medical care.
