The incident was captured by the team at Channel 5, which was on board a British warship at the time, filming a documentary about the ship’s mission to observe a Russian submarine. There is a recorded moment in the footage when a warning signal sounds and someone from the crew calls “What the hell was that?” and other uncensored statements are heard.
A spokesman for the Department of Defense has now discovered that the sonar system towed by the frigate “HMS Northumberland” (another frigate “HMS Kent” in the title picture) has collided. “The Royal Navy regularly monitors foreign ships and submarines to ensure the protection of the United Kingdom,” the statement said.
The filming team discovered that the pilots of the frigate’s helicopter had noticed the submarine’s periscope shortly before the collision, and then it sank, but a moment later collided with the sonar. A sonar is a device towed by a rope and communication cables that is able to observe the movement of submarines with the help of sound.
The BBC has not revealed the location of the incident, but the Daily Mail reports that it occurred about 200 miles (about 320 kilometers) north of Scotland. It is known that around the time of the incident, the frigate HMS Northumberland has also spotted the destroyer “Vice Admiral Kulakov”, which has returned from a mission in the Mediterranean through the waters off the coast of Scotland. It is not known whether the Russian ship and the submarine went together.
