Almost twenty years after the introduction of the euro, the phrase has not yet been forgotten. “I wouldn’t have bought it for so much shillings.” Of course, the longer the previous currency was an everyday companion, the deeper its value burned into the memory of numbers. However, the comparison is no longer really appropriate, because staying at a price level that is decades old ignores the fact that incomes have also risen since then.
