IMSS Reports 79.2% Advance in Seasonal Influenza Vaccine Goal

Mexico City. The Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) reported this afternoon an advance of 79.2 percent with respect to the goal of applying 12 million vaccines against seasonal influenza during the winter season.

The institution specified that from October 16 to the second week of January, more than 9.5 million doses have been applied.

Juan Carlos Martínez Vivar, coordinator of Medical Programs in the Area of Vaccine-Preventable Diseases, highlighted that Social Security met an intermediate goal committed to the National Health System by applying more than 70 percent of the doses at the end of 2023. and that 100 percent vaccine application will be achieved before March 31.

He explained that the campaign is aimed at girls and boys from six months to five years old, who must receive two doses of vaccine as an initial schedule and, in the following season, only receive an annual booster.

People aged 60 and over require a booster in each winter season, because they are more likely to become seriously ill due to respiratory illnesses in the months of December to March, the period of highest incidence of infections due to this cause.

He explained that vaccination is extended to people who, due to some work or health condition, are at greater risk of disease: health personnel, pregnant or exclusively breastfeeding women, and people between five and 59 years of age with a serious chronic illness who predisposes you to complications if you do not receive the vaccine in a timely manner.

He added that it is preferable to go with the National Health Card when showing up at the UMF vaccination modules, as well as in the more than 2 thousand fixed and semi-fixed positions installed in public places, but if you do not present it, it is applied the vaccine and a receipt is provided to be attached to the document. However, he warned that not having the National Health Card available is not a reason not to get vaccinated.

Martínez Vivar recalled that as part of the winter campaign, the vaccine against covid-19 is also applied, with a goal of 6.7 million doses, for which he urged the population within the risk groups, whether entitled or not, to go to Social Security medical units and receive both immunizations. The simultaneous application of both vaccines in people with an indication does not affect the performance or safety of the biologicals.

He highlighted that when going to any of the more than 1,200 Family Medicine Units of the IMSS, from Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., the National Health Card is reviewed so that each person has their complete schedule. vaccination, since they are useful to avoid up to 14 diseases that are preventable through immunization.

He pointed out that special care is taken to ensure that children under five years of age have complete schedules for their age of BCG, Hepatitis B, conjugated pneumococcus, acellular hexavalent, rotavirus, triple viral (measles, rubella and mumps) and DPT (diphtheria, whooping cough and mumps) vaccines. tetanus).
