IMSS promotes preventive medicine to avoid cases of leprosy

Through a statement and within the framework of the World Day to Combat Leprosy, which is commemorated on the last Sunday of January, the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) reported that it promotes preventive medicine to avoid cases of such disease.

Leprosy is a chronic disease that mainly affects the skin, peripheral nerves, respiratory tract and eyes; Its infection occurs from person to person and is transmitted by droplets of nasal and oral fluids, when there is contact with an untreated person.

In this regard, the dermatologist of the IMSS attached to the Regional General Hospital (HGR) No. 1, in Cuernavaca, Jennifer Pérez Hernández, indicated that it is a bacterial disease.

“Leprosy is a silent condition that affects the nervous level and contagion is directly due to prolonged coexistence from person to person, however, it is rare among the population,” he explained.

There are two types of this disease: tuberculoid leprosy and lepromatous leprosy, and the main characteristics are determined by the number of lesions, sweating, sensitivity, presence of spots or change of skin color, among others.

Pérez Hernández pointed out that preventive medicine is important, so, in case of any ulcer or injury, he recommended going to the Family Medicine Unit (UMF) for a review, and if necessary, receiving the appropriate treatment.

The incubation period of the bacteria is too slow and it may take up to 10 years for the first symptoms to appear, but it is a curable disease when there is a timely diagnosis.

If left unattended, leprosy can cause irreversible injuries to people; However, it is a disease that can be controlled.
