At the Regional General Hospital (HGR) No. 2 “Dr. Guillermo Fajardo Ortiz”, of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) in Mexico City, the Itinerant Blood Donation Campaign was held on February 17 and 18, with the purpose of promoting the altruistic donation of blood components to save lives and attend medical emergencies.
During both days, more than 200 candidates came to donate and more than 100 units of blood were collected that will allow responding to the needs that arise in surgeries performed at HGR No. 2, reported Dr. María de la Luz Pérez Ponce, director of this unit.
Pérez Ponce explained that these campaigns will be held every month for two days, to promote blood donation and have sufficient reserves of this vital component.
For her part, the Hospital’s Head of Social Work, Rosalva Sandoval Ávila, stressed that these donation campaigns are vital, because the collection of blood is only from human to human, there is no chemical formula to obtain it, for which she thanked the participation of people who are becoming more aware of this noble activity.
He stressed that since HGR No. 2 is a 100 percent surgical hospital, a lot of blood is used for all the emergency care and diagnoses that are made daily.
The requirements to donate blood are: to be healthy, to be older than 18 years and younger than 65; not have had recent surgeries. no tattoos or piercings in less than a year; not be taking medications; weigh more than 50 kilos and go fasting for a minimum of four hours and a maximum of eight; avoid eating fat 24 hours before donation.
