IMSS invites people to undergo mammograms and self-examinations to prevent breast cancer

San Luis Potosí, SLP.- The coordinator of Nursing in Public Health, Rafaela Osornio Paredes, called on the beneficiaries to go to the PrevenIMSS modules, located in each of the UMF, where mammography studies are carried out and also specialized guidance on the correct way to perform breast self-examination in women aged 20 and over.

She added that mammograms are available throughout the year so that women can access medical services and have early detection of breast cancer, in order to access timely and appropriate treatment.

Osornio Paredes indicated that clinical breast screening is recommended once a year after the age of 25, as well as for those under 40 who have detected some abnormality during their self-examination.

She stated that the PrevenIMSS modules have specialized nursing staff to perform and provide guidance on the proper Breast Self-Examination Technique.

If a lump or abnormality is detected during self-examination, the patient is referred to the unit’s physician for clinical follow-up.

Regarding the mammography study, It is performed on women aged 40 to 69 years, in order to identify lesions that are not detected during breast examination.

He specified that the requirements to access this benefit are to be IMSS beneficiaries, be a woman between 40 and 69 years of age; not having undergone the study in previous years; copy of appointment cards, copy of INE and copy of CURP.

Likewise, the recommendation is that those interested come without deodorant, cream or perfume on the chest area, clean with neutral soap and, preferably, dressed in two pieces: blouse and pants or skirt.

Breast cancer detection begins with prevention, which is why the IMSS also conducts educational campaigns on self-examination, providing the necessary information to motivate patients to also act as responsible for their health.
