Pachuca, Hgo.-The Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) in Hidalgo reiterates the importance of correct hand hygiene to prevent gastrointestinal diseases such as: infectious diarrhea, hepatitis A, typhoid, cholera or parasites, which mainly affect girls, children and older adults.
The lack of hygiene facilitates the transfer of bacteria, viruses and parasites that can spread through constant contact with dirty surfaces such as: public transportation, classrooms, work areas or by petting pets to later consume food; causing symptoms such as: diarrhea, stomach upset, nausea, vomiting and dehydration.
Dr. Jorge Orlando Islas Vázquez, Supervising Medical Epidemiologist of the IMSS in Hidalgo, pointed out that “by dedicating just a few seconds of our daily routine, we can significantly reduce the risk of contracting these infections; That is why it is necessary to perform hand hygiene properly before and after cooking, eating, going to the bathroom or being in contact with contaminated areas.”
Likewise, Islas Vázquez indicated that the correct practice of hand washing consists of moistening them with clean water, taking a sufficient amount of soap, rubbing the palms, between the fingers, the knuckles, around and under the nails for a period of between 40 to 60 seconds, rinse and dry with a clean towel.
If you present any of the symptoms mentioned above, avoid self-medication and go immediately to the corresponding Family Medical Unit to receive immediate attention and appropriate treatment.
Social Security in the entity promotes hygiene habits to prevent food contamination as a strategy to reduce gastrointestinal diseases among the population.
