IMSS Blood Banks, with reservation only for 2 days – El Sol de Tijuana

Tijuana.- In the worst-case scenario, the blood reserve of the Blood Bank of the Mexican Social Security Institute in Tijuana could only sustain two days of emergencies, said the director of the site, Angélica Ortiz Rodríguez.

Faced with such a situation and within the framework of the national campaign for altruistic blood donation, the IMSS calls on the general population to go to this and other banks “to donate life”, through blood products.

Before the pandemic, the altruistic donation for the IMSS meant 3% of the total donations, more than a year after the pandemic this figure decreased by one percentage point, which translates into dozens of donations less.

Currently only 2% of the total number of people who come forward to donate to the Blood Bank do so altruistically, that is approximately 30 people per month. The figure is very low, considering that the needs are many, said the doctor, “the blood of altruistic donors is destined for obstetric emergencies (pregnant women with bleeding), childhood cancer patients and trauma emergencies, accident victims,” she explained. the doctor.

The rest of the donation is what the institute calls replacement, family and friends who come to donate for a related patient already hospitalized or in the process of being operated on.

Dr. Ortiz Rodríguez stressed that the donor receives the benefit of the analysis of his blood, that is, general health studies that he maintains when making the donation.

The hours in which the altruistic population is received are: Monday to Friday, between 7:00 and 17:00; and Saturdays and Sundays, between 7:00 and 12:00 hours; the process requires at least 60 minutes of the citizen’s time.

The requirements are to be between 18 and 64 years old, in good health and present the INE credential. In addition to having at least four hours of fasting free of fat intake.
