A Pakistani judge dropped the arrest warrant against former Prime Minister Imran Khan as he headed to court on Saturday after missing several hearings.
And the French Press Agency quoted his lawyer, Gohar Khan, as saying, “The court canceled the arrest warrant after Imran Khan appeared. The session was postponed until March 30.”
How did things come to court?
- Imran Khan, 70, was overthrown in April 2022 following a parliamentary motion of no confidence, and he faces dozens of legal cases as he seeks to return to power.
- An arrest warrant was issued against him after he failed to appear in an Islamabad court on March 11 to answer the accusation of not making public all the diplomatic gifts he received during his tenure and making money from them by selling some of them, which he denies.
- In Islamabad, the police deployed, on Saturday, about four thousand elements in anticipation. Police also raided his home in a posh neighborhood of Lahore, after blocking nearby roads and suspending mobile phone services in the area.
Tension in the street and accusations of conspiracy
- Khan has asserted that he is vulnerable to a plot to prevent him from contesting the elections scheduled for October. “The aim of their attack on my house was not to bring me to the Islamabad court, but to put me in jail,” he added.
