Imran Khan and Shah Mahmood Qureshi Sentenced to 10 Years in Prison for Violating National Security Laws

Imran Khan sentenced: Former Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan (Imran Khan) 10 years imprisonment. The punishment is in the case of making public documents of a confidential nature and affecting national security. Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) vice-chairman and former foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi has been sentenced to 10 years in prison by a special court in Pakistan. Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) president Imran was sentenced to prison while the general elections are to be held in Pakistan on the 8th of next month.

The Cipher case is about a diplomatic document. It was reportedly missing from Khan’s possession. Following the no-confidence motion against him last year, Khan had repeatedly said that the cipher had pointed to a conspiracy to oust him from the prime minister’s office. 10 witnesses came to record their statements against Khan and Qureshi in the case. They were brought in by Pakistan’s Federal Investigation Agency (FIA). A case was registered against Khan and Qureshi in August for violating the country’s secrecy laws by disclosing details of official diplomatic communications.

Imran (71) and Qureshi (67) were arrested in this case in August last year. The trial was completed in jail. In December, the Supreme Court of Pakistan granted bail to Khan and Qureshi after their arrest. Khan was ousted from the post of Prime Minister of Pakistan in April 2022 through a vote of no confidence. In the Toshakhana case, the Islamabad court had sentenced the Islamabad High Court to three years in prison.
