Improving Package Deliveries with a Smart Doorbell: A Review of DoorBird D1101V

Sat, 08:08·Rewind·sonThe problem is simple. My study is a little away from the front door and I can easily ignore the gong when music is playing. I’ve missed parcel deliveries in particular more than once because the delivery people usually only wait a few seconds because of the time pressure before setting off again. The delivery is then either left unattended in front of the door, is handed over to the neighbor or a note is thrown through asking me to pick up the shipment at the nearest parcel station. This has to be different. Compact
Type IP video door station (smart bell) Rec. Price (€) from approx. 540 eurosThe original idea was to simply get a radio bell that would be connected to the gong and signal visitors in the study. For various reasons, I rejected the idea and opted for a decent “smartbell” instead. The DoorBird door stations are available as surface-mounted or flush-mounted versions in various color versions and for up to 500 residential units.
After a long search among the usual suspects such as Ring, Netatmo and countless no-name providers from China, none of which appealed to me for a variety of reasons, I eventually found the company DoorBird. According to its website, the company belongs to the Bird Home Automation Group, which in turn is part of a company called ASSA ABLOY Security Technology GmbH. In addition to the large product range, DoorBird also offers German-language support and advertises itself as “Made in Germany”.

The model I selected D1101V SURFACE-MOUNTED (data sheet), like all other models, are available in different quality levels with V2A, V4A stainless steel, bronze and brass, as well as in many RAL colors. Since my doorbell is protected from the weather under a canopy, the simplest version, which is available from 542 euros, was enough for me. The D1101V has a bell button with intercom and video camera. The system is Smart Home & NVR compatible with KNX, Loxone, Synology, KIWI, AVM FRITZ!Fon, URC, Bang & Olufsen, Control4, QNAP, RTI, ELAN, Fibaro and much more

Here is a short video intro from the manufacturer:

For me, a few basic factors were particularly important, including the possibility of connecting via WLAN, because laying a LAN would have meant too much structural effort, and the fact that there is no online or subscription requirement with DoorBird. If desired, the bell can operate alone in the local network. There are also various online services for cloud recording, including a free option:
