Improving Diabetes Management Services for Vulnerable Groups in Remote Areas: Collaboration between Ministry of Health and Novo Nordisk

Jakarta (ANTARA) – The Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) is collaborating with private companies in an effort to improve diabetes management services for vulnerable groups in remote and very remote areas.

In an effort to increase access to diabetes treatment services for vulnerable groups in remote and very remote areas in West Java Province, the Ministry of Health is collaborating with the Novo Nordisk company.

Director of Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases of the Ministry of Health Eva Susanti in Jakarta, Wednesday, stated that cooperation between the public and private sectors can make a significant contribution in overcoming public health problems, including in the management of diabetes.

According to him, diabetics in Indonesia have increased from 10.7 million in 2019 to 19.5 million in 2021.

Meanwhile, the 2020 Health Social Security Administration Agency (BPJS) report shows that only around two million people with diabetes have been diagnosed and received treatment through the National Health Insurance Program.

Eva said that the partnership model Affordability Project run by the government together with private companies to improve people’s access in remote and very remote areas to diabetes treatment services.

According to him, the partnership project, which includes educational activities as well as examination and care services for diabetes patients at primary health care facilities in West Java, can be adopted in efforts to prevent and control other diseases.

Affordability Project including educational facilitation as well as diabetes examination and care services in 46 primary health facilities in West Java.

A total of 118,521 people have utilized diabetes screening services and 2,744 patients accessed HbA1c screening services in the partnership project, whose implementation involved the Ministry of Health, the Health Service, the Indonesian Endocrinology Association (PERKENI), and Novo Nordisk Indonesia.

Vice President and General Manager Novo Nordisk Indonesia Sreerekha Sreenivasan said that her company has provided training to more than 100 professional health workers and nearly 1,000 health volunteers to help improve diabetes management services.

“We have also carried out comprehensive diabetes screening, reaching more than 100,000 individuals in the community. In addition, HbA1c screening has also been carried out by around 3,000 patients in primary health facilities,” he was quoted as saying in the company’s press release.
