Women between the ages of 50 and 75 are invited every two to three years to participate in breast cancer screening, which consists of taking x-rays of the breasts (mammography). At the request of the State Secretary for Health, Welfare and Sport, the council has assessed whether the population screening can be further improved within the current screening capacity.
The council concludes that the population screening achieves its goal by reducing mortality from breast cancer. The council currently sees no opportunities to improve the research. Adjusting the age limits of the target group, for example to 45 years, would not provide a better outcome within the available screening capacity.
In a few years, the council expects sufficient scientific substantiation for the use of AI, risk stratification and new imaging techniques such as tomosynthesis. Because new developments in AI are moving quickly, the council recommends making preparations now for their implementation.
