Smoky or hazy conditions in the city improved considerably overnight and early Friday morning, according to NY1 Meteorologist John Davitt.
By 5 a.m., the city’s air quality index across all five boroughs was below 100, and the smell of smoke had dissipated.
However, an air quality alert is still in effect as levels are expected to rise in the afternoon and could exceed alert levels at that time.
Still, the worst of the smoke conditions are behind us.
“The health and air quality advisory has now been extended to 11:59 p.m. on Friday, June 9.
“Please continue to limit your outdoor activities and wear a mask,” Mayor Eric Adams wrote in a social media post.

Some showers this afternoon may also help reduce smoke levels in the city.
Pollution levels on Friday will look more like a typical summer pollution event in the city than the historic event the city experienced on Wednesday.
The outlook for the weekend is for pollution levels to be below alert levels.
