The application first sends web traffic to a server maintained by Apple, where it is stripped of its IP address. From there, Apple sends the traffic to a second server maintained by a third party that assigns the user a temporary IP address and forwards the traffic to the destination website.

According to the American company, the use of a third party is necessary to prevent even Apple from knowing both the identity of the user and which website the user visits. Apple has not yet announced which third-party partners it will use for this, but says it will make that public soon. The feature will likely not be available to the public until later this year.
