MAINTAL – Caring for primary school students after school hours is essential for many working parents. It enables the compatibility of family and work. From 2026 onwards, federal lawmakers will gradually introduce a legal entitlement to all-day care. In order to ensure quality and support the further expansion of places, the city council has decided on new funding requirements from which primary school care providers should benefit.
As a child- and family-friendly city, Maintal has been financially supporting the childcare services offered by independent providers for many years. This also applies to afternoon care at primary schools. Because the demand for childcare places has increased significantly in recent years and the general conditions have changed, a new version of the previous funding requirements became necessary.
“With the new funding requirements, we are paving the way for a sufficient supply of places with good quality of care,” emphasizes Mayor Monika Böttcher. These were decided by the city council at the end of September and apply retroactively to August 1, 2023.
With the new funding concept, the city is making it easier to apply for funds to support the implementation of the legal entitlement from 2026.
In addition to the support provided by the Main-Kinzig district as the school authority, the funds make a contribution in the form of a voluntary operating cost subsidy and special subsidies. “We have developed the funding requirements with the participation of the independent primary school care providers. In the future, equal treatment of childcare offers will apply, regardless of whether the schools are already in the pact for the afternoon or not. The amount of the subsidies depends on the number of childcare places available,” explains Regina Lange, specialist service manager for independent providers.
Thanks to the higher subsidy, the provider has more opportunities to improve its offering in terms of quality and quantity. In order to simplify the application for funding, the guidelines have been made more transparent in coordination with the independent providers. In addition, the funds can be accessed more easily and quickly.
Ervin Susnik from SC Budokan, as the provider of afternoon care at the Werner von Siemens School, praises the result: “In our more than 14 years as a provider of childcare facilities in the school sector, the city of Maintal has achieved a great success with these funding requirements.” (red)
