Improve cell therapy in stem cell transplantation

A Mexican scientist carried out research on cell therapy in stem cell transplantation, in a process where donor cells are genetically modified in the laboratory to introduce them to the patient who requires them to treat their disease and achieve a cure.

Stem cell transplant treatments began more than 50 years ago, as a result of the search to replace the immune system in people who lost this capacity due to radiation and nuclear accidents.

Alejandro Madrigal Fernández, Professor of Hematology at University College London, in the keynote address: “Present and future of cell therapy for cancer and other diseases. Beyond the final frontier”, he commented on the findings and results of his stem cell research.

The researcher explained that this type of therapy is commonly used to replace or repair the function of abnormal cells that cause diseases such as leukemia, lymphoma, lung and breast cancer, as well as infections and inflammatory processes.

Cancer is the second cause of death in the world. About 70% of cancer deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries.

Madrigal Fernández explained that in clinical trials they found that stem cells have the ability to self-renew and generate different components that can serve as anti-inflammatory treatment and for injuries or ulcers.

In addition, he stressed that around the world, more than a million and a half patients underwent this type of therapy, with which 50 percent have survived.

According to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI), during 2021, 90,525 deaths from malignant tumors were reported in Mexico. Of this number, 7,973 deaths from breast cancer were recorded.

Carlos Pineda Villaseñor, general director of the National Institute of Rehabilitation (INR) “Luis Guillermo Ibarra Ibarra”, affirmed that the results of the research could be applied to the area of gerontological biotechnology and cell regeneration in people with diabetes or who suffered severe burns.
