Imprisoned Russian opposition leader Alexey Navalny was reported missing for more than two weeks. His spokesperson Kira Yarmysh confirmed on the 25th that Navalny had been transferred to a penal colony in the Arctic Circle.

Reuters reported that Yarmish pointed out that Navalny was found in the IK-3 penal colony in the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Region (Yamal-Nenets), which is about 1,900 kilometers northeast of the Russian capital Moscow. Yarmish said that Navalny’s lawyer had successfully met with him on the 25th.

“This prison will be worse than the one he was in before. They are trying to make his life as unbearable as possible,” Yarmish said. “They are definitely trying to isolate him and make it more difficult for him to contact the outside world.”

Navalny is currently being held in the “Polar Wolf” prison, which is believed to be one of the toughest prisons in Russia. Most of the prisoners there have been convicted of serious crimes, and the winter weather is extremely cold, with temperatures expected to drop to around minus 28 degrees Celsius in the coming week.

According to the Moscow Komsomolskaya newspaper, the prison is located about 60 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle. It was built in the 1960s and was once part of the Soviet Gulag (GULAG) labor camp.
