Imprisoned Eritrean Preachers: The Plight of Christians in Eritrea

Imprisoned Preachers

Asmara: More than 400 Christians, including two preachers, have been imprisoned for more than 19 years in the African country of Eritrea. They are incarcerated without seeing the outside world and facing serious human rights violations because of preaching the gospel. On this week’s episode of Voice of the Martyrs Radio, host Todd Nettleton revealed the plight of these two preachers to the world.

Those detained are members of the Full Gospel Church of Eritrea. Christians in Eritrea are facing severe human rights violations.

Todd recounted that in 2002, the Eritrean government summoned most of the leaders of the evangelical congregations and told them that the congregations had been shut down. Then many groups were working secretly. The government hunted down and arrested Christians without mercy. Todd Nettleton said Christians are being detained indefinitely without even being charged.

He also explained why Eritrea is called the North Korea of โ€‹โ€‹Africa. Three Christian churches are licensed to operate in Eritrea. In 2002, the Eritrean government closed all churches outside of the Catholic, Evangelical, and Lutheran Orthodox Churches. According to Open Doors, an international religious persecution monitoring organization, more than a thousand Christians are being held in Eritrean prisons without any reason. Eritrea is ranked fourth in OpenDoors’ latest annual report on countries where it is difficult to live as a Christian.
