Impressions from playing Resident Evil RE: Verse

Although last year’s Resident Evil Resistance did not go well, Capcom is trying its luck again and as a gift for the 25th anniversary of this series, they have decided to release another multiplayer game. It is subtitled RE: Verse and will be available to anyone who purchases Resident Evil Village. So they follow the same tactics as Resistance. It’s a long way to go, but I’ve already been able to try the closed beta of this game.

What is the game all about? This is a classic deathmatch, ie everyone against everyone. Each match lasts 5 minutes and players try to get as many points as possible by killing their opponents. Streams are important in the game, if you manage to kill more enemies in a row without dying, you get more points. And when you die, you can restore your streak by killing an opponent who has killed you before.

There is only one map in beta – the Raccoon City Police Station, which you know from parts two and three. There are a total of 6 characters. Namely Jill Valentine, Claire and Chris Redfield, Leon S. Kennedy, Ada Wong and Hunk. Of course, each has its own unique abilities, one passive and two active. In such games, it is important to have everything well-balanced, but unfortunately that did not work out completely. While Claire or Chris are very strong in my opinion, Ada is basically useless.

This is a classic deathmatch, ie everyone against everyone.

However, what sets the game apart from other similar titles is the fact that after death you do not immediately recover as your chosen character, but become one of the five monsters. Which it will be depends on how many ampoules you collect with the virus while playing as a survivor. If none, you will be Fat Molded from RE7, which is so weak that you would rather kill yourself. If one, you will become either Hunter Gamma from the recent RE3 remake or Jack Baker from RE7 again. I would like to point out here that Baker is really very strong and much better than the mentioned Hunter. If you manage to collect two tubes, which is the maximum, you will be either Nemesis or Super Tyrant. Unlike humans, however, monsters themselves lose their lives over time and quickly become an easy target.

The concept itself is not entirely bad, even though the game didn’t look good from the trailer at all (and by that I mean visually, but fortunately the comic filter can be turned off in the game), in the end I had a lot of fun. RE: However, Verse is a long way from calling it a quality game. In addition to the aforementioned imbalance in the abilities of individual characters, there are many other problems. For example, an animation that starts after your character is dropped. It’s so long that before your character rises, someone will kill you in the meantime and there’s nothing you can do about it. Overall, any possibility of giving someone a stun is too strong in this game. Another problem is also input lag, the whole control is very slow and it’s definitely not something you want in a multiplayer action.

Imbalance of abilities of individual characters and a lot of other problems.

Probably the biggest problem is the lack of content. Yes, the game will keep you entertained for a few hours, but then what? It’s still the same all around and lacks any variability. It is clear to me that new maps will be added to the game with the full version, but I do not think that will be enough. RE: In short, Verse will not make fans of the series happy. There are definitely other things that players would like as a 25th anniversary celebration, such as a remake of RE: Code Veronica or a new remake of the first part. But Capcom apparently does not want to give up the idea of multiplayer from this universe. And what’s more, it might not be the worst step if they gave RE: Verse at least as a free to play game. But as a gift to buy the Village, this title is doomed in advance. I think it will turn out very similar to Resistance, which died very quickly and today this title is played on Steam by around a hundred players.

Despite all this, my impressions of the game are not downright negative, but it is due to the fact that I was very skeptical about the game and I did not expect anything from it, so I would recommend it to you as well. You have to go into play with an open mind, not think too much about it and not think at all about how it fits into the lor, that all the protagonists go against each other and after death they turn into a monster. It doesn’t make sense, and it doesn’t make sense either. If you are a fan of MP games and you can forgive some shortcomings of this title, RE: Verse will be quite fun for the first hours. However, I strongly doubt that this game will become something that you would return to regularly.
