Republican George Santos was elected to the New York State House of Representatives on a largely made-up resume. Even from there he spreads falsehoods.
New York Republican George Santos arrived in the US Congress with an almost completely fabricated CV. While public pressure is enormous, the 34-year-old is by no means considering stepping down from his post. Things don’t go well for him: more and more falsehoods come to the surface.
In early December, The New York Times unleashed an avalanche when it reviewed the resume of George Santos, a New York Republican elected to the US Congress.
Santos has since admitted that his claims about his Jewish roots, his job in Wall Street banks, and his college degree were fabricated. He now he is being investigated at home and abroad. And: more and more lies and frauds are becoming public.
The imposter’s American dream
Latin, which has conquered a democratic stronghold as the first example of the “American dream”, is above all an example of “relentless lying”, comments Spiegel.
According to US media, it is also now clear that Santos’ mother, contrary to her claims, was not a finance director but a cleaner. Furthermore, she did not die in the attacks on the Twin Towers, but only five years later. Nor did grandparents die in the Holocaust, as you said.
Santos’ finance company is as non-existent as his charity, according to Spiegel. And to complete the ambiguity surrounding the man, the origin of large sums of money that flowed into Santos’ private and political accounts is also unclear. Also, he was married to one woman until 2019, but kept the divorce a secret.
Democrats in the House of Representatives have obviously already attacked Santos and declared him “inadequate.” Rep. Ritchie Torres half-jokingly announced a law against liars in Congress – the “Stop Another Non-Truthful Office Seeker Act,” or “SANTOS Act” for short.
The US and Brazilian judiciaries are investigating Santos
In addition to the US prosecutor’s office, the Brazilian judiciary has now also opened a criminal investigation against Santos for fraud, reopening a case ten years ago.
He is accused of using a stolen checkbook to purchase $700 worth of goods from a store in 2008, according to media reports. The case was dropped because detectives were unable to locate Santos. However, his address has been “verified” since his election to the US Congress, the prosecutor said.
According to a Spiegel report, Santos is currently shunned in the US Congress by both Democrats and most of his friends in the Republican party. The chaos surrounding the never-ending election of a Speaker of the House of Representatives has given him some respite from the media’s hounding. But in the meantime they remembered him and asked him again about the invented stations of his CV. It is then said that he saved himself by running towards the parliamentary hall.
And Santos continues to fantasize. As early as Tuesday, he said on his website that he was sworn in as a member of the US House of Representatives, with the “Speaker of the House” being sworn in by him.
The House of Representatives had no speakers because Kevin McCarthys had not been elected and no one had been sworn in. The message quickly disappeared from the Santos website, apparently it ended up there automatically. “George Santos has told his first lie of the new year,” said New York Democrat Ritchie Torres. Apparently he expects more.
