Imported Food Commodities in Jakarta: Why Garlic and Salt Must Be Imported

Jakarta

There are a number of domestic food ingredients that must be imported. For example garlic and salt.

Presidential Chief of Staff Moeldoko also acknowledged that a number of food commodities had to be imported. For garlic itself, the reason is because domestic production can only afford a little.

“One, garlic must be imported because garlic can grow at an altitude of 1,200 more than that. So if forced the results will be bad. So it is in those areas that can be planted. But to get around this, these importers have to plant so many percent of the import quota,” he said when met at The Westin Jakarta, South Jakarta, Wednesday (12/7/2023).

Next, Indonesia is also a subscriber to salt imports. Again, domestic production has so far not been sufficient to meet domestic demand.

“Once again not all beaches can produce salt efficiently. Salt can only be in certain areas that have a long dry season, actually the best is in NTT, Madura because the dry level is long because the main threat to salt is rain,” he explained.

For information, the need for garlic in the country every year reaches 669,000 per ton. However, Indonesia is only able to produce 23,000 tonnes annually. This was conveyed by the Head of the National Food Agency Arief Prasetyo Adi at Commission IV of the DPR RI.

Arief explained, because of this limited production, Indonesia had to import more than 90% of garlic to meet domestic demand.

“This garlic balance update on the right is an import update until May 29, 2023, domestic production is only 23,000 tons, chairman,” Arief said in a RDP with Commission IV DPR RI, Monday (5/6/2023).
